What To Expect

Cotopaxi National Park
It is an active stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains. On a clear day, Cotopaxi is clearly visible on the skyline from Quito and is part of the chain of volcanoes around the Pacific plate known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. It has an almost symmetrical cone that rises from a highland plain of about 3,800 m

Laguna de Limpiopungo
Its clear but frigid waters are surrounded by small mountains and hills. It has a magnificent view of the picture in a frame of elevations such as Cotopaxi, the Sincholagua and Rumiñahui. Here you can see a great variety of birds, herds of llamas and some other species of mammals, especially rabbits and deer, among others.

Our guide was amazing! He gave us so much information and was very enjoyable to be around. The hike itself was a bit difficult, but very worthwhile.
Do it!

Cotopaxi was closed due to unusual activity from the volcano, so we went to Quilotoa instead. Oscar was a great guide - knowledgeable and friendly, and stopped several times along the way for us to get coffee, use the washroom, and learn about the indigenous peoples and how they live in the highlands. Our van was comfortable and had AC which was welcome! The visit to Quilotoa was great as well and ended with lunch at a local restaurant (get the locro de papa soup!). Would definitely recommend this tour! :)
Hiking in snow, hard, but fun

We had to start from a point in the road one mile away from the parking lot, due to snow, rain and mud, so our hike turned out to be longer that usual. Hiking up to Qotopaxi refuge in snow is very difficult, mostly to the lack of oxygen (we just flew in to Quito from sea level), but once you make it there, the feeling of accomplishment is overwhelming.
Viator let us down

Our guide, Oscar, was excellent. The Viator organization not so much. The hotel meeting place we chose from its list is no longer in business, creating a problem at the morning meeting. If our guide had been given our phone number or we had his the problem could have been quickly corrected. It seems logical enough; people are meeting somewhere so provide the ability to contact each other, no?
